Why men need to pay attention too
Men are often the last to think about nutrition. Busy schedules, eating out and skipped meals make gaps more likely, and many men only see a doctor when something goes wrong.
Nutrients that matter for men
These nutrients have authorised roles that are especially relevant to men:
- Zinc contributes to normal fertility and reproduction and to the maintenance of normal testosterone levels in the blood.
- Selenium contributes to normal spermatogenesis.
- Vitamins B6 and B12 contribute to normal energy-yielding metabolism.
- Magnesium and pantothenic acid contribute to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue.
- Vitamins C and D contribute to the normal function of the immune system.
The plate comes first
The NHS basics apply to everyone: at least 5 portions of fruit and vegetables a day, wholegrain starchy foods, some protein such as fish, beans, eggs and lean meat, and less salt and saturated fat. A multivitamin such as Wellman is a complement to this, not a shortcut around it.
Move, sleep and get checked
Aim for at least 150 minutes of moderate activity a week plus strength exercises on 2 days, as the NHS recommends. Protect your sleep, and do not smoke.
Regular check-ups for blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol become more important with age, especially after 40. A supplement never replaces those checks or any treatment your doctor prescribes.
